The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning to U.S. citizens and individuals living or travelling abroad about a fraudulent crypto job advertisement that has recently surfaced.
The ad is associated with labour trafficking, where victims are coerced into participating in international cryptocurrency investment fraud schemes. The FBI has urged potential victims to come forward and report any suspicious activity through an online portal.
According to the FBI, victims have primarily been targeted in Asia, where they are lured with a variety of job opportunities, such as tech support, call centre customer service, and beauty salon technicians. However, upon arrival in a foreign country, job seekers find themselves trapped and forced into committing cryptocurrency investment fraud.
The FBI’s involvement in numerous cryptocurrency scam cases in recent years highlights the growing concern surrounding crypto-related crimes. Just on May 1, the Detroit Field Office of the FBI, in collaboration with the National Police of Ukraine, successfully shut down nine virtual currency exchange services that were allegedly aiding cybercriminals.
Domains such as 24xbtc.com, 100btc.pro, pridechange.com, trust-exchange.org, and bitcoin24.exchange were seized during the operation.
CertiK, a crypto security and auditing firm, recently released a report highlighting the exploits and scams that took place in April. The findings revealed a staggering loss of $103.7 million, accounting for half of all the crypto exploited so far in 2023. This alarming figure emphasizes the need for increased vigilance and caution within the crypto community.
As the popularity and adoption of cryptocurrencies continue to rise, it is crucial for individuals to remain cautious and exercise due diligence.
