Filipino Telecom Firm to Offer Master Classes in the Metaverse

To encourage the use of fictional space, Philippines-based telecommunications company Globe Telecom declared that it will provide master classes in the metaverse.

The masterclass will be centered around entrepreneurship in the metaverse, e-sports, fashion, and music. Classes will take place on Globe Telecom’s Virtual Hangouts (VH) Metaverse platform.

The platform contains divisions for music, movies, fashion, and sports games named GoJAM and GoWATCH, GoKOREAN, and GoSPORTS. Anna Baldos, the director of Prepaid Portfolio at Globe Telecom, noted that the divisions show the company’s expertise in the nascent metaverse market.

Globe Telecom promised to provide scholarships for Google Career Certificates — which are expected to deliver up to 40,000 IT courses for residents — as part of the efforts to increase the use of the metaverse in the Philippines. The scholarship slots have been occupied by Filipinos, but according to the company’s head of integrated marketing, “allocations will open up in the near future.”

The telecommunication juggernaut funds children’s books in the Cebuano, Bicolano, and Maranao languages — in addition to endeavors to integrate the metaverse and distributed ledger technology (DLT).

The Philippines is known for being one of the countries with the fastest adoption rates of the metaverse, where citizens flocked to the technology in large numbers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Axie Infinity and other metaverse games sprang to popularity around that time as they provide an opportunity for people to increase their revenues.

According to the latest Ciena research, approximately 90% of the Filipino workforce showed a desire to shift to the metaverse, motivated by its efficiency and lack of lengthy travel.
